Overview:

The GenaTi Molecular Extraction & Biobanking Services (GMEBS) offer mainly the extraction of high quality biomolecules (DNA, RNA or Proteins) - from various biological samples (biospecimens), and have a capability to handle even large scale projects. In fact, the biomolecules (DNA, RNA or Proteins) extraction is the basis and starting point of any OMICs based diagnostics or research project(s). GMEBS thus offer tailored DNA, RNA or protein extraction services alone or undertake any required downstream analysis for theranostics, life sciences projects, biomedical research, pharmaceutical industry, forensic medicine, Food and Agricultural industry, and additionally provide sample storage services.

Tissue Procurement & Molecular Extraction:
The GMEBS tissue procurement/reception covers many biofluids and tissues (normal or pathological) either fresh, fresh-frozen or fixed. It is ideal to include adjacent or distant non-tumor tissue together with the tumour tissue, from the same surgery when possible. Patient’s consent together with the annotations of the clinico-pathological features are mandatory. In particular, GMEBS facility offers molecular extraction of biomolecules including DNA, total RNA, mRNA, miRNA and proteins from the following types of biospecimens:

  Biofluids (blood, plasma, serum, buffy coat, leukocyte
 and leukocyte fractions (PBMCs), saliva, urine)
  Fresh tissues (e.g. biopsies/surgical removal), buccal swabs
  Fresh frozen tissues (Snap freezing in Liquid Nitrogen)
  Fixed tissues (e.g. formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE); optimum cutting temperature (OCT) compound; RNALater)
  Cell lines, primary cell cultures, cell lysates and
  cell aspirates
  Faeces
  Toenails

Quality Control/Assurance of Extracted Biomolecules:
Each biomolecule either extracted at the GMEBS or directly received from the researcher will be necessarily subjected to quality control measures including the evaluation of the quantity, the purity and the quality. Extracted nucleic acids and proteins quality control will be performed by using an appropriate device, such as:

  1. Spectrophotometer (Nanodrop) which is a full-spectrum, UV-Vis device used to quantify and assess purity of DNA, RNA and Proteins using volumes as small as 0.5?L.
  2. Qubit fluorometric quantitation is designed for precious samples and high-value applications. It comprises an easy-to-use Fluorometeric-based detection and sensitive quantitation assays. The target-selective fluorescence is sensitive and it does not overestimate the quantities of nucleic acids or proteins obtained, making it ideal for precious samples and demanding applications.
  3. Bioanalyzer is a very accurate microfluidics-based platform for sizing, quantification and quality control of DNA and RNA. After loading the sample of the Agilent chip of choice, the sample moves through microchannels and sample components are electrophoretically separated according to their size and charge. The fluorescent dye molecules intercalate into DNA or RNA strands. They are then detected by their fluorescence and translated into gel-like images (bands) and electropherograms (peaks).

Biospecimens/Biomolecules storage & banking:
In addition to biospecimens extraction and quality control, the GenaTi GMEBS facility can offer biospecimens or biomolecules storage to support ongoing research projects or population-based studies. The facility will maintain an inventory and surveillance of these study-specific biospecimen collections under the best international biobanking standards.
